I can do something about that (power) fairly quickly by teching Machinery (unlocking Heavy Footman or Maces), Construction (cats and my UU elephant), Guilds for knights and Engineering for +1 road movement. I was building units and massing them on Sitting Bull's border ... my culture had pushed the border back so that I could perform live action drills right outside one of his cities.

While that was going on, Charlemagne remembered that he was at war with someone so he sent some units to the front ...

Charelemagne also wanted to be in my bad books so he destroyed a pasture ... but I will come back to that later (or not).

So, how did Sitting Bull respond to this troop build up? He declared war on me and threw his chariots and horse archers into the fray. As it turned out, my rally point for attacking his cities happened to be in a forest so he could throw units at my units all day if he wanted to - I wouldn't care.

However, he did push a mounted stack (6 plus 1 axe) against a city defended by archers and warriors ... plus one lone Heavy Footman. I moved the heavy footman onto the hill in front of Sitting Bull's invading stack to slow down the advance and moved a few other units around to clean up anything that was left.

Sitting Bull attacked and my lone heavy footman performed like a true hero - killing 4 war chariots and a horse archer before succombing to a fifth war chariot. That stack was now a couple (as in 2!) of units and easily cleaned up.

I had picked up the Free Artist from Music (pre-war) and so to aid my teching, I researched Calendar and completed Mausoleum of Maussollos before firing off my Golden Age.

It didn't go all my way as Sitting Bull was able to pull off a few lucky combat results.

Breaking News

Ruff Quits Game, claiming it has become a mop up operation. Other Nations say that Ruff must play on so that they can live ... claim that Ruff is committing AI genecide.

I knocked off Optics and had 2 boats out hunting the circumnavigation bonus. I was also the first to paper so I got to trade maps extensively netting me over 1000g to tech banking. Combine that with my (now) 18 cities to the 2nd best's 10, 75% lead in score, dominating in key metrics (GNP, Production) and equal in power ... this game is in mop up stage and I will not be continuing it. I think I need to start with a poorer starting position (dull) or move up in difficulty (Emperor).

And at this stage the game was called after applying the Mercy Rule.
