All Happiness is the Release of Internal Pressure

Game Report: Adventure 9 - Stagnation (5/6): On the Campaign Trail

I've just completed the UN and thus elections for Secretary-General will be held shortly. The two candidates standing are me (I completed the UN) and Hatty (top civ in population). This is exactly how I was hoping it would turn out and all the planning, trading and civ relationships that I have been working on for the past 1900 years will shortly bear fruit (hopefully).

1862 - The Election of the Secretary-General

Of the 729 votes to be lodged, I have 117 and I need 291 (40%) to win the Sec-Gen - I also need to beat Hatty. I have seen other games where I got the required votes but the other civ got more.

Here is a run down of the relationships ...

I expected to get the votes from Mansa, Qin and Saladin. Here are the results for Sec-Gen ...

A crushing victory for me! I got the votes I expected but I also got Lizzie's votes. Votes for World Leader (and thus a Diplomatic Victory) are harder to come by so I didn't expect these 4 civs to vote for me in that contest. I thus needed to improve my chances with Elizabeth to hold her votes. Her favour civic is Religious Freedom and I didn't have any 'wisely chosen civic' modifiers with her. Swapping to Religious Freedom would lose me the +7 same faith modifier I have with Saladin but I didn't really see that as a problem (Saladin would still see me at +8 and Hatty at -4). So, I swapped my civics to improve my chances with Elizabeth and waited for the World Leader elections to be called.

1870 - The Election of the World Leader

This time there are 739 votes to be lodged and I have 120 (up 3 from last time and the power of concentrating on population growth). I need 458 (62%) to win. Tallying my votes from the Sec-Gen election, I totalled 519. Taking out Elizabeth, the total is 459 (and remember that was in an election when there was only 729 votes to be lodged). This is looking good.

1872 - The Results

I get Elizabeth's votes - all 60 of them. I also get Mansa's (93). These votes, together with my 121 gives me a total of 274. Naturally, Hatty votes for herself and JC abstains. It all comes down to the last two ... Qin with 116 votes and Saladin with 136 votes. I'm 185 votes short and I need to pick up both civs.

The tension mounts as they annouce the final results from both civs ...

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hissssssssssssssssssssssssssssss. Saladin, who was +8 with me and -4 with Hatty abstains. What a crock! Rigged! Hanging Chads! Voter box unstuffing! Scandal in the UN!

Hmmn - what to do. I swap back to Pacifism and Judaism to try and bring Qin and Saladin back into my camp. I also mass an army (Artillary, Infantry and maybe tanks if I can swing the tech) to go and take JCs votes from him (he has 73 votes and if I take them all, it would mean that I can win if I pick up Qin too). Before those forces are ready to go ...

1878 - The Election of the World Leader #2

This time, I have 123 votes (more population growth) and I need 460 out of 743. No big discussion this time - don't expect much difference, just hit enter.

1880 - The Results

I lose Elizabeth's votes - things are getting worse. I kept Mansa's (93), together with my 123 gives 216 out of the required 460. Qin (116) votes for me (yippee) giving me 332 votes. JC (73) abstains and Hatty fails to vote for me (sigh). It has come down to Saladin ... the unpredictable, recalcitrant Saladin and his 137 votes ...

I Win!
